The challenge

Die Macherei opened in autumn 2021 in Munich’s Berg am Laim district as an office and commercial neighbourhood with a distinctive design ambition. Three architecture practices, HWKN by Matthias Hollwich, holger meyer architektur and OSA Ochs Schmidhuber, designed six buildings across the 26,400 m² site, each with its own architectural language and uses, from offices and restaurants to a design hotel. Brick façades, weathering steel and exposed concrete connect them, recalling Berg am Laim’s former clay fields and brickworks. Laim means clay; bricks from this area were also used to build Munich’s Frauenkirche. The project received a European Property Award for 2019–2020. When ALDI SÜD became interested in the location, the space had already been allocated to a competitor, with negotiations under way for several months. When those negotiations stalled, a window opened for ALDI SÜD to present its own concept. A conventional store would not have been enough: the neighbourhood’s operators wanted a design that belonged to the identity of the wider development.

The approach

Rather than invent a different supermarket, we took the existing ALDI standard and changed it precisely where the brand meets the neighbourhood. The entrance uses the same brickwork as the façades of Die Macherei. Above it, a backlit ALDI logo in weathering steel welcomes customers, custom-made for this location. Lettering and lighting are black rather than white; ceilings remain open and walls are exposed concrete. The windows are kept clear of vinyl graphics, allowing daylight in and views from outside. The store becomes part of the neighbourhood, rather than simply a tenant.

The industrial character of Die Macherei continues from the entrance into the interior. Lighting, open ceilings and materials connect the store with its neighbourhood.

The outcome

From the first conversation to opening in less than eleven months.

Less than eleven months passed between the first substantive discussions and the opening on 28 October 2021, despite material shortages and a shortage of skilled trades. Long-standing partners helped make this possible. Today, the approximately 1,500 m² store serves a neighbourhood with up to 2,500 workplaces. It represents an urban expression of ALDI SÜD that has been covered by trade publications including Stores+Shops, CUBE and LebensmittelPraxis.
